When writing it is very important to get you point across. Chapter 1 explained that to get your point across, you have to think about your audience- who is going to read your paper? What kind of message do you want your readers to get from the writing? Once you have these two questions answered, you have to use the rhetorical appeals- ethos, pathos, and logos.
The book also explained what the three appeals are and that in most cases all three of the appeals are used in writing. It also made me realize how the media used the appeals to get the people’s attention. In commercials, the most common appeal is pathos- appeal to someone’s emotion. This is done through the use of a sad song playing in the background and/or using pictures that would appeal to the audience’s emotion.
Another appeal that commercials use is ethos- credibility/ authority of a person. This is done by having someone who is (sometimes) well known advertise their product. For example, Calvin Klein uses Justin Bieber to buy their products. Justin Bieber is famous and by showing the world that Justin uses them, some people would want to go out and use them as well.
The last of the appeals is logos which has to do with logic. This is where commercials use statistics. However, some commercials come up with their own statistics just to convince the viewers of the product they’re selling.
All three of the appeals are almost always used in a person’s writing and even on the news.
